Understanding the diversity of life history traits developed by animal species remains one of the major challenges of evolutionary biology. To allow a better understanding of the evolutionary processes involved, it is necessary to identify the underlying physiological mechanisms of energy trade-offs between major functions of the organism. The use of multidisciplinary approaches, from the genome to the organism and at the crossroads between individuals, populations and environments allows an integrative understanding of multi-factorial processes in terms of space, time and biological scales. Finally, dissociating the effects of natural from anthropic constraints (fishing, contaminants) has to be fully integrated in a sustainable natural resource management perspective.
